Overview

Well-known as the 5th highest mountain in the world, Mount Makalu is situated at an altitude of 8463m. It lies in the Makalu Barun National Park, which takes up an area of 2330 sq. km and extends around the Sankhuwasabha and Solukhumbu districts of Nepal. And, the panorama of the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest, Mt Lhotse, Mt Chamlang and several other enormous mountains greet you.

Makalu Base Camp trek will begin after taking a flight to Tumlingtar from Kathmandu of Mid-eastern region in Nepal for. The track to Makalu Peak swathes plain and sub tropical gorge of Arun River basin to astonishing moderate passes, Tutu La pass (4200m) and Keke La pass (4230m). And many edges climb up from the Barun River vale which is one of the isolated mid hill trails. The trails moves all along the stunning Barun river valley and crosses Shipton pass (4127m) before reaching Makalu Base Camp (5000 m) from where scenes of the southern part of Makalu with Everest and Lhotse can be witnessed.

Makalu Base Camp trekking can be fairly demanding in some places that totally depend on the level of physical strength. Plus, along with stupendous scenery of several gigantic peaks, the base camp climbing route appreciably provides the chance to explore the culture and life-style of the Gurung, Rai and Sherpa people residing in the region.

Best season

The best season to go for Makalu Peak climbing trek is October and November though it can be preferred throughout the year. Spring is also good choice because of warmer temperatures. Talking about summer, some trekkers prefer to go.

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival at Kathmandu (1300m)

Upon your entrance in Kathmandu, you will be welcomed by our representative at Kathmandu International airport and then you will be moved to hotel. You can relax for the rest of the day and in the evening you can enjoy dinner with Nepali cultural dance. Overnight at hotel.

Day 02: Fly to Tumlingtar and drive to Chichila (1,840m)

From Tumlingtar we will catch a flight and in around 50 minute we will get to Chichila from Kathmandu. And then we land on a rough grass runway at Tumlingtar.  From Tumlingtar, for about 3 hours we drive on a bumpy path which takes us to Chichila.

Day 03: Trek to Num (1,500m)

From Chichila we will trek to Num. Now, we have a rather swift walk all the way through the pleasant villages and fertile mountain forests. An edge line with the gigantic peak views on both side and hanging on the end is known as Num. Overnight in Num.

Day 04: Trek to Seduwa (1,540m)

Our way today moves down perpendicularly all the way via the woods and terraced plots of ground takes to Arun River from Num. The area is quite hot and the forest on the gorge sides provides a bit of dark. Makalu National Park begins and we enlist our permits. Camping right at the top of the village to stay overnight.

Day 05: Trek to Tashigaon (2,070m)

We departing from Seduwa climb up the edge bordered by the Kasuwa Khola to the east and Ipsuwa River on the west. After passing all the way through the hillside and calm villages and we will pass by small paddy pastures, we then reach the village, Tashigaon.

Day 06: Trek to Khongma (3,560m)

Departing from Tashigaon our route moves up to reach Khongma. Khongma is the final stop ahead of going across the Shipton La and moving downward in the upper parts of the remote Barun Valley. You will be viewing scrubs and rhododendrons that envelop the lower sections of the mountains. Overnight in Khongma.

Day 07: Rest and acclimatization day

To be familiar with the environment, we will have a rest day at Khongma and alternatively we can go around the region. The next day we cross the Shipton La Pass. Overnight in Khongma again.

Day 08: Cross Shipton La and trek to Debotay (3,650m)

Moving further on from Khongma we trek to the top of the Shipton La taking few hours. After walking ahead from the lake Kalo Pokhari, we move to the Keke La at an altitude of 4,152m.  Amazing views of Chamlang (7,319m), Peak 6 (6,524m), Peak 7 (6,758m) and many more can be witnessed. After going across the Keke La pass, we move downward all the way through the arresting valley to Debotay. Overnight in Debotay.

Day 09: Trek to Yangle Kharka (3,600m)

We will get ahead of all the way through the Rhododendron forest today which takes us to the Baruni Khola. A hilarious walk will let us gain elevation slowly, until we enter Yangle Kharka which is situated at the base of the valley. Overnight in Yangle Kharka.

Day 10: Trek to Merek (4,500m)

Today, we will stroll to Merek. And since we are climbing at height further than 4, 000 meters, we have to keep on our mind to let our body acclimatize with the environment at higher altitude. Overnight at tented camp in Merek.

Day 11: Trek to Shersong

On this day we will go up the valley, via yak pastures and rock fields. Upon our arrival at Shersong the south east edge of Mount Makalu appears in front of us. Overnight at campsite in Shersong.

Day 12: Day tour to Makalu Base Camp (5,000m)

This is one of the main days of our trek. We have to make sure about becoming properly accustomed with the higher altitude before climbing up to Makalu Base Camp (5000m). As soon as you arrive at the base camp we need to enjoy the wonderful views of the beautiful peaks all over the day. Overnight in Shersong after returning back from the base camp.

Day 13: Trek to Yangle Kharka

From Shersong, we walk downward back to the valley and experience the final glance of Makalu prior to turning to the curve and eventually reach Yangle Kharka. Overnight in Yangle Kharka.

Day 14: Trek to Mumbuk

Today, from Yangle Kharka we move downward to Mumbuk.  Then go up the rock gorge to Mumbuk. We will be over rewarded by the greeneries beneath. Overnight at Mumbuk.

Day 15: Trek to Khongma

After departing from Mumbuk, en-route you will walk all the way through a forest of firs, rhododendrons etc. then we will come across the Shipton La, Keke La and Ghungru La. And as we move down we will reach Khogma. 

Day 16: Trek to Tashigaon

Today, we continually go down to Tashigaon. Descend is long and vertical one. And we come transversely through the hillside to eventually reach the Sherpa town, Tashi Gaun. Overnight in Tashigaon.

Day 17: Trek to Num

We will return back over the same trail that we began our trek with. And moving downward to Arun River and Seduwa again we trek through the forest to reach Num. We go following our footsteps all the way back downhill to the river and climb back the reverse side of the valley to Num. Overnight in Num.

Day 18: Trek to Chichila, Transfer to Tumlingtar

Once more we go over our steps to reach Chichila. The final come back of the trek will let us reach to Tumlingtar. Overnight at Tumlingtar.

Day 19: Fly back to Kathmandu

We finish the journey as soon as we take a flight from Chilchila to Kathmandu. We will go back to the hotel in Kathmandu. Optionally, you can stay in the hotel and relax. Or, you can also go around the historical and world heritage sites in Kathmandu that you couldn’t go for on the second day of your trek. Or, you can go around for shopping. Overnight at hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 20: Departure

You will drive to airport by our representative and take the flight to reach your destination from Kathmandu.

In Gosaikunda 2014 November...

We took two groups to Gosaikunda at December 2014. We sent two guides with each seven and five groups. It was very successful trip of our company as before. Every travelers of Korea and Norway became lot of happy to visit there. Again they will arrive here in same company to visit ghorepeni poonhill trek. 

To Everest Base Camp at December 2014

After the route of Langtang, we went to Everest with five German friends. We enjoy a lot with the beautiful view of Everest in very close and the society of Sherpas in Namche Bazzar. It was quite expensive, but also we completed our trip without any difficulties and any problems. Our trip was very enjoyable and ended with lot of happiness and great success.
